Towards secure QKD (Q30b)
The progress in quantum computing poses a threat to today’s cryptography. One proposed solution is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). QKD promises security based on the principles of quantum mechanics. But there are still many open questions: Implementation security, Key-use, theoretical security guarantees of protocols and classical authentication of the key-agreeement. In the talk I will report about a recent project that aims at developing a Protection Profile for QKD-devices. I will then try to explain which steps will be necessary to make QKD usable in the real world. I will also present BSI’s current position on the use of QKD wrt european infrastructure projects.
