The HSM’s Evolving Role in our Future Digital World (G13a)

Hardware Security Modules (HSM) have been around for many years in a variety of forms but they acquired their more “modern” denomination in January 1994 with the publication FIPS 140-1. For the past 25+ years, HSMs have more or less remained confined to their 1994 sandbox and continue to this day to assist security workloads with their cryptographic needs. In recent years, computing workloads have been migrating: first from on-premises data centres to the cloud and now, increasingly, from cloud data centres to ‘edge’ locations where they are nearer the source of the data being processed. Should HSMs, as they were defined in 1994, continue to be the cryptographic servants or should they become a much more critical component of our digital future? This presentation will introduce the idea of the HSM as a Platform (HaaP) for a more secure Digital World.
