Non-Physical Random Number Generators According to AIS 20/31 (N30a)
Random number generators (RNGs) with non-physical noise sources are mainly used in software systems that do not have access to an evaluated physical noise source. Prominent examples of such generators are the Linux RNG /dev/random and Stephan Mueller’s Jitter RNG. In this talk, the speakers will discuss the main characteristics of non-physical noise sources and illustrate the differences from dedicated physical noise sources. the speakers will introduce an evaluation methodology for non-physical noise sources and explain the requirements of functionality class NTG.1 according to AIS 20/31. Finally, the speakers will report on current BSI activities in relation to non-physical RNGs.
