How Cryptographic Proof of ID will Enable the Future of Identity Transactions (G11a)

ISO standardization has made in-person digital identity transactions with privacy protection a reality. Today, when we share our physical ID card, we lose control of our personal information. Once handed over, all critical identity information can be scanned, copied, or remembered by anyone. ISO/IEC 18013-5 standardizes cryptographic proof of identity documents – Mobile Driver’s License (mDL) and Mobile National ID (mID) – on mobile devices. This gives us more control over our ID information, can reduce fake IDs, and opens a world of possibilities for Document Issuers, Citizens, and Verifiers. The session will educate attendees on how both “online” and “offline” modes of data interchange work and includes a demonstration on how Citizens can safely share Issuer-signed identity attributes from their mobile devices. Mobile ID, using the ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard, will put identity data under control of the user who owns the ID. Data minimization and informed consent further improve privacy and user experience while generating better confidence in identity transactions.
