The proliferation of compliance programs serving the U.S. Federal market and regulated industries has created a confusing network of overlapping product certifications. When some require validated encryption but others don’t, or possibly worse, they allow unsubstantiated claims to slide through, the prominence, prestige, and even the future relevance of FIPS 140 is threatened.
