Daniel Kahn Gillmor, Senior Staff Technologist, ACLU Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project E-mail remains a critical backstop for the Internet, offering federated, interoperable, accessible communications. But encrypted e-mail has never been widely adopted despite years of availability. Autocrypt aims to make end-to-end e-mail encryption possible for regular people, so that they can protect sensitive cleartext e-mails without the pain traditionally associated with encrypted e-mail. The project brings together mail user agent developers, usability, cryptography, and e-mail experts, with a focus on user experience, effective workflows, and straightforward mental models. We’ll discuss tradeoffs, lessons learned, implementation strategies, as well as future work.
